How Laser Hair Removal Works

To perform light-based hair removal, our Fotona4D painless laser hair removal technology uses a large rectangular window emitting broad-spectrum light that is applied to the surface of the skin. The light travels harmlessly through the epidermis and dermis until it strikes the hair follicle, which contains a dense, melanin-rich hair shaft and bulb. The dark-colored melanin absorbs the light and rises quickly in temperature, destroying the hair-producing cells surrounding the follicle. Because the heat is not sustained, no damage occurs outside the follicle area. As a result, the laser impacts only the hair follicle and not the surrounding skin. Over the course of six (but occasionally more) treatments, this leads to the hair follicle no longer being able to grow hair, leaving your skin smooth and feeling younger.

Why Six Treatments?

There are two primary reasons why laser hair removal may need six or more treatments. The first is the hair growth cycle, and the second is the fact that there are always other factors that may impact results. Let's explore these in more depth.

Cycles of hair growth:

Every hair on your body goes through distinct stages of growth.

  • Anagen (active growth phase): During the Anagen phase, the laser can effectively target and damage the hair follicle. At any given moment, however, only about 20–30% of your hair follicles are in this phase.

  • Catagen (transitional phase): Hair follicles contract and separate from the hair shaft during the Catagen phase. At this point, the laser is ineffective.

  • Telogen (resting phase): The hair follicle is dormant, and there is no hair shaft during this period. Once more, at this stage, our laser is incapable of targeting the hair.

  • Anagen (regrowth phase): In this phase, the hair follicle returns to the active growth phase, where it begins to produce a new hair shaft.

It's important to remember that, regardless of the stage, there are certain obstacles with a person's hair that may potentially affect how well painless laser hair removal treatments work:

Treatment Limitations:

  • Hair follicle depth: Stronger laser light is necessary to reach and kill deeper hair follicles. This may result in hair that is thicker or more coarse, requiring additional treatments.

  • Light absorption: Melanin in the hair follicle must absorb the laser light for it to have any effect. Because lighter hair colors have less melanin, they react less favorably to laser treatment.

Other Factors:

  • Medical issues: Medical conditions can have an impact on the results of laser treatments and future hair growth. As this is unique to each person, it can sometimes be challenging to predict results.

  • Hormones: Variations in hormone levels can impact hair growth and the effectiveness of laser hair removal procedures. As hormones are constantly impacted by countless other external factors, such as diet, environment, and age, it is nearly impossible to perfectly predict how an individual patient will respond to laser hair removal treatments.

For effective laser hair removal, the total number of treatments required varies depending on a number of factors. Our team of specialists can evaluate your skin and hair type and make a customized treatment recommendation.
