The SPF generally refers to the amount of time you can spend in the sun without getting sunburned. An SPF 30 would allow you to spend time in the sun 30 times longer without getting sunburned than if you weren’t wearing it. It’s recommended to be conservative with this number, and re apply sunscreen often if in direct sunlight.
